GZA has been honored with an Engineering Excellence Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Rhode Island chapter for GZA’s work on the Ørsted Offshore Wind Component Manufacturing Facility at ProvPort. GZA’s project team was led by Senior Principal David Carchedi, PE and Associate Principal James Marsland, PE.

The 30,000-square-foot Ørsted facility enables the assembly of advanced turbine foundations and other large-scale and specialized components integral to the Ørsted portfolio of Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York wind farms that will deliver clean, carbon-free electricity to millions of Northeast residents.

GZA provided a suite of geotechnical and environmental design services for the design-build project, including the creation an innovative, alternative foundation design utilizing rigid inclusion ground improvement in lieu of deep foundations, which provided a much more cost-effective and efficient foundation system.

GZA President and CEO Patrick Sheehan said: “On behalf of all their colleagues, I want to congratulate everyone from GZA connected with the offshore wind component facility development for this much-deserved recognition from ACEC of Rhode Island for their innovative, successful work. We’re proud to be part of a project that has created more than 100 high-quality jobs, close to multiple Environmental Justice Communities, and will help deliver renewable energy throughout New England.”

Dimeo Construction Corp. led construction for this design-build project, which was built by union labor represented by IBEW Local 99, Laborers Local 271, Ironworkers Local 3, and the Rhode Island Building and Construction Trades Council. Other key subcontractors who worked alongside GZA were Arden Engineering Constructors, LLC; Assa Abloy; Boxx Modular, Inc.; Brunca Waterproofing Corp.; Capco Steel Erection Company; DiGregorio Corporation; Greenwood Industries, Inc.; H.
