GZA has been retained by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) to provide final design and environmental permitting services for repairing and reconstructing fourteen seawalls protecting NH Route 1A.
The seawall segments, which consist of stone revetments and mortar rubble masonry walls, total approximately 3.2 miles in length along NH Route 1A in North Hampton and Rye. The areas were heavily damaged during storms in March 2018 and authorized for federal disaster assistance. GZA previously worked with NHDOT from 2019 to 2021 to develop conceptual plans to rehabilitate nine of the stone revetment seawalls that protect Route 1A.
GZA President and CEO Patrick Sheehan said: “Route 1A in North Hampton and Rye is a vital transportation corridor and features some of the most beautiful scenery of New Hampshire’s Seacoast. GZA is honored to continue our partnership with NHDOT to develop plans to make the highway more resilient to future storm damage and enhance its safety and accessibility for all travelers, including commercial traffic and tourists.”
GZA will serve as prime consultant on the seven-year project, leading a team that also includes HNTB Corp.; Surveying and Mapping, LLC.; Independent Archaeological Consulting, LLC; and Preservation Company. Construction work to repair and reconstruct the seawalls is expected to continue over the next seven years, subject to availability of funding and grants.
