Being a Little More Sustainable With Compost Bins
At a Glance
Composting has long been a popular method for enriching soil and disposing of organic waste naturally. Yet as the modern waste stream was built, composting fell by the wayside. Recently, the GZA team had a great opportunity to bring composting back and reduce the amount of waste.
According to the EPA, in 2018 alone, nearly 22 percent of all municipal solid waste was food waste, 63.1 million tons. Composting that not only keeps it out of the waste stream, but turns it into a rich fertilizer ideal for gardens and general soil improvement.
However, to compost, you need a method to do it, especially if you only have a small amount of space to work with. Fortunately, we were offered a great opportunity to get reduced cost compost bins for our homes thanks to the Northeast Resource Recovery Association (NRRA). Compost bins help decompose waste aerobically, creating a product ideal for nurturing plants.
The NRRA is a nonprofit organization that works with municipalities, businesses, and citizens across New England, connecting rural communities with end markets for recycled products and developing solutions to help reduce waste in ways both environmentally and economically sound. As part of their mission, they offer reduced cost compost bins in a yearly sale.
Employees from our Bedford, Norwood, and EGGI Meredith offices teamed up to purchase a pallet of compost bins. GZA is proud to say we were the only private company to participate in NRRA’s 2022 Annual Compost Bin Sale. For more information on what you can do, visit the NRRA website!
