Fossil Fuels

For many decades, since the 1970s, GZA has been providing a full range of environmental, geotechnical, and other critically important engineering services supporting the permitting, design and construction, as well as the decommissioning and dismantlement, of fossil-fueled power plants.

The environmental services provided have ranged from the physical environmental (surface and sub-surface considerations), biological environmental (natural resources, such as wetlands-related), to permitting, with the air quality effort being the most critical component of the permitting process.  In the power industry, GZA is renowned for our engineering services: geotechnical, including soils investigation and foundation design, geo-civil (storm-water) geo-structural (retaining walls), hydraulic and hydrologic (in this post-Sandy era), marine/waterfront, and demolition support.  GZA provides a wide array of engineering expertise to the construction community.  Overall, we have provided our services to developers, engineering companies, contractors, as well as directly for our utility clients.  There are few power generation clients that are not familiar with our expertise and reputation for excellence.  We are involved in power projects from the incipient study phase to preliminary and detailed engineering, through construction.  Power plant retirements or re-powering projects are typical in this current time.  We excel in demolition support, and our expertise extends to site re-development support given the intrinsic high properties values in certain locales.  In addition to power generation, our work includes power delivery, specifically, transmission and distribution (T&D) .

Environmental retrofits that have necessitated cooling towers, scrubbers, NOx controls, and other similar systems, have often been required as a result of recent environmental control legislation.  Our primary focus with these systems, typically for the construction industry, has presented GZA with specific challenges.  Confined space for foundations, poor soils, karst and voids, underground contamination, and tight tolerances are all major considerations that GZA have successfully addressed.
